Dear Ruairidh,
Climbing means quite different things to different people. That is abundantly clear if you read these forums even just occasionally.
Some people treat it as a 'pastime' - like knitting or gardening perhaps? Other people treat it as a sport. Then of course there are those who proclaim deeper meaning 'way of life'.
Don't be put off by a small band of the usual internet snipers. Doing indoor competitions is great, and doing well in them is even better. Good to see comp climbing standards are rising in Scotland.
Well done to Pete, whoever he is. These people really should get support rather than sarcastic responses. Why support? Because comp climbing is tough and requires a lot of sacrifices and whether you like it or not, these people are representing Scotland / Britain in the sport.
cue the usual responses...

David, utter nonsense! Ruaridh is a serial poster of tripe about kids and competion climbing, and this particular thread was up there with the most bollocks he has yet posted!

his brief post says well done to someone for gaining a place on the british team.
I struggle to see how you can find 'utter bollocks' in that statement.

I don't know about you, but if I had children and they, or their friends, did something I thought was worthy of congratulation (and of course they would - all the time), I would just congratulate them. I wouldn't be straight onto an internet forum shouting off to all and sundry. but that's just me.
so to everyone out there 'well done and congratulations' even if it's just for digging that garden, learning how to do your first cast-off, or even wasting time surfing the internet. you rock.

What a pointless argument, honestly. Pete did well in his sport/activity/pastime/whatever the f**k you wanna call it. I don't see why people start arguing about such pointless things. If you dont see a point in congratulating him, DON'T, theres no need to start raising an argument. And to those of you who start arguing whether climbing is a sport or a hobby or whatever, honestly, its everyones own opinion and some people see rock climbign in different ways. Personally, I enjoy climbing because it allows me to stay fit, i make good friends and i enjoy competing (a lot) but i never piss people of by telling them that rock climbing isnt they way they view it as, everyone enjoys rock climbing for different reasons, just like people who play football proffesionally enjoy it differently than people who play just to have a laugh. Well Done Pete

For those of you who are interested. Pete (The Champ) is a 16 year old climber from Glasgow who has made a number of notable ascents indoors, sports outside, bouldering outside, and trad outside.

I'm with George on this one. I don't see any place for a nationalistic attitude in climbing, or any need to congratulate some kid for beating some other kids. In fact I think both of these things tarnish the spirit and culture of the game.
And please don't start talking shite about 'young tigers setting new standards', or 'development of the sport'. Climbing doesn't need to be developed, nor do climbers need new standards - climbers set their own standards.

It is a 'game', by the way. And as with all games, it's not winning or losing that's important, but how you play.

i didnt say well done for beating anyone! Yes you did? Surely that's what competitions are all about? Surely some other kid got booted out of the team, for Pete to take his place? But that kid's a LOSER, right? We HATE that kid. He totally SUCKS. Whoever he was, he's SHITE because he's not as good as PETE. Is that right?

Ruairidh, Im afraid its difficult to take anything you say on here seriously as you have a history of talking tripe and losing the plot  . I dont think its right for kids to be forced into a culture of glorification and publicity just because they happen to be better than other kids at climbing (and perhaps put more effort into training). Theres plenty of time for pete to make his own mind up when hes an adult whether he wants to go down that route. in the mean time please give the climbing kids back their childhood innocence and let them climb for the sheer enjoyment of the 'sport' outwith the egotistical nonsense of the adult world.
cheers
Erik
